I personally suffered one too many of these January hangovers before I decided to rethink my outlook. Now, close to one half of my Christmas shopping is done throughout the year. So, in a sense, I cut my December spending in half.

With the rest, I start off with a plan, scour the internet for the best deal on what I want, and get most of it that way.
