Five Things I Would Never Buy On The Internet

by David Bakke

As a small business owner of an internet re-selling business, I am quite the avid online shopper. Basically, if I see something that I think I can make a buck on, and then I buy it. Over the years, I’ve purchased everything from baby monitors to specialized internal meat thermometers.

Having said that though, there are quite a few things that I would never purchase on the internet and I would not advise that you do ether.

Although not all-inclusive, here is my Top Five list of things I would not purchase online.

Jewelry

I’d be scared to death of purchasing any kind of jewelry on the internet, unless it is from a very trusted seller, and probably not even then. Jewelry is an item that you definitely want to be able to see up close and personal and with your own two eyes before you make a decision on it.

Anything from A Non-Established Website

Although I do a great deal of online shopping, the majority of it comes from a handful of websites. Beware of rogue websites with prices that are too good to be true, beware of websites that are not VeriSign Secured. You’ll know this because they’ll have the little VeriSign logo at the bottom of their webpage. Ties tell you that utilize SSL encryption software, which protects the information you enter on their site.

Used/Refurbished Items

I don’t know—although you can save money by doing so, to me, the savings are not significant enough to take a chance on a used or refurbished item. Also, keep in mind that these items usually either come with no warranty at all or nothing more than a ninety-day manufacturer’s warranty. Personally, I’d rather spend a few extra bucks, get a brand new item, and enjoy the full one year standard manufacturer’s warranty.

Shoes (And Clothing in General)

This is another one of those things that you really need to get your hands on before buying. Regarding shoes, remember, one shoe store’s size seven may not be exactly the same as another shoe store’s size seven. Why take the risk and worry about having to pack stuff back up and return it when you can go to a brick and mortar store almost just as easily?

Anything Without A Review

One of the things I enjoy the most about the internet is the ability to read reviews of products already on the market. It is a fantastic tool to utilize. And I personally do my best to review any and all products that I purchase online–you’ve got to keep the stream of information flowing. Anyways, if a product has bad reviews, obviously I don’t go near it, but if I can’t find any reviews for an item, that is generally a red flag to me. The way I see it, the item must not be that popular if nobody’s taken the time to review it, and if it’s not at least a decent seller, then how good can it really be?

Closing

Although most of these subtopics were general categories rather than specific items, I hope you’ve found this article to be helpful and informative.

Are there any particular items that absolutely will not purchase online? Feel free to add your comments below.

Buying on the internet is fun and easy. Your article provides very good advice. For me, I would never buy prescription drugs. Some items should just be bought at a brick and mortar store.
